     Isabell Hendriworth died on 28 Oct 1840 Selkirk, SEL, SCT; entry reads: Isabell Hendriworth Relict of Francis Fairbairn, Selkirk 80.2
Which of the few documented Francis Fairbairns around is the one married to Isabella Henderwick (and variants)?
Wife Isabel(la) is variously documented (in record time order) as Hendriworth, Henderwick, Hendwick, and even once, presumably erronously, as Innerwick.
Although all three known children were baptised at Kelso: Isabel (1794), John (1796), James (1801); at least one (James) states he was born Maxton; Francis' wife Isabel is buried at Selkrik.
Francis is documented at least once as "portioner".
One candidate, in Selkirk, is a Francis born 1746 to a shoemaker & Burgess of that town, John Fairbairn, married to Betty Turnbull, but wouldn't "Burgess" have made it to at least one of the known children's records? Or the occupation of a shoemaker/cordiner which ran in that family?
Disambiguation: There is also a contemporary Francis and Isabella FAIRBAIRN couple based in Earlston, but that Isabella is NEWTON. Both couples have an Isabel(la) born in 1794 and fully accounted for, so are not one and the same family.3,4,5,6

      In 1840 her surname was recorded as Isabell Hendriworth (from her own burial entry.)2 In 1873 her surname was recorded as Innerwick (from dtr Isabella's dth cert., inf. her grandson James SPENCE.)4 In 1885 her surname was recorded as Hendwick (son James' 1885 dth cert, informant her granddtr Isabella.)7,8 Her surname was recorded as Hendrick (exact source yet to be re-confirmed.)9

  • John Fairbairn+ (Dec 1796 - Apr 1876); mother Isabella (from dth cert but no surname stated) is assumed to be Henderwick, not Newton, given known birth place of Roxburghshire, from census information, which matches 1797 baptism. Although technically possible for the other Isabella to have had dtr Janet in Earlston in Feb and a son John in ROX in Dec 1796, this is unlikely, particularly as Janet of Earlston's sister Isabella is an exact contemporary of John's sister Isabella, both of whom are accounted for1,10,11
