     Eliza Smith married James Fairbairn, son of John Fairbairn (m. Sarah MORRIS) and Sarah Morris, say 1855 ?Newcastle upon Tyne, NBL, ENG, (assumed to be the 1855 Newcastle marr.)1,5
     Eliza Fairbairn died on 31 Mar 1927 56 India St, Edinburgh, Dist of St Andrew, MLN, SCT, at age 92; cert. shows Eliza as 92 widow of James FAIRBAIRN, cheque clerk Bank of Scotland; d. ?2?:40 am of old age, d/o James SMITH engineer & Eliza m.s. FAIRBAIRN, both dec'd; Inf. son HAR FAIRBAIRN of 72 Northumberland St, Edin; Reg. 31st.6,7,8
Current thinking is that son Hugh might not have got his mother's death cert. info quite correct, apart from the occupation of Eliza's father?
The hint here is that his own name was Hugh Aird Robert FAIRBAIRN, and that Eliz was the informant for Jane FAIRBAIRN nee SMITH's death as her sister, rather than sister-in-law.
Jane's parents are Hugh Aird SMITH and Helen/Ellen FAIRBAIRN who married in Manchester in 1830, and had a dtr Elizabeth born in 1834, ie of an age to be this Eliza, and also the Elizabeth shown as niece of Jane FAIRBAIRN in Newcastle in 1851.
The 1851 census for Hugh and Ellen SMITH shows Jane at home, but not Eliza(beth).
Naming pattern for James & Eliza's children certainly indicates Hugh and Helen as Eliza's parents.9,10,8

     The census of 1861 showed Eliza with her husband James, their son John, their dtr Helena 3 Malta Tce, Edinburgh St Bernard, Dist of St George, MLN, SCT, household enumerated as FAIRBAIRN: James 44 check clerk (banker) b Edin; wife Eliza 26 b ENG; Children: John W 4, Helena 2, both b Edin; Servant: Eleanor SMITH 17 table maid b New Galloway Kirkcudbrightshire; Cook: FRASER.1
     Eliza Fairbairn appeared on the census of 1871 12 Warriston Cres, Edinburgh St Cuthberts, Dist of St Andrew, MLN, SCT, with James Fairbairn, enumerated as FAIRBAIRN: James 54 banker b Edin; Eliza 36 b ENG; Children: John W 14 (no occ), Helena 13, Hugh A 9 both scholars, Eliza J 3 all b Edin; Also servants: Jane SAMUEL 20 and Helen THAIN 18 b Fraserburgh, ABD.11
     The census of 1881 showed Eliza with her husband James, their sons John and Hugh, their dtrs Helena and Eliza 6 Henderson Row, Dist of St George, MLN, SCT, household enumerated as FAIRBAIRN: James 64 retired banker b Edin; Eliza 46 b ENG; Children: John W 24 banker; Helena 22 (no occ); Hugh A R 19 banker; Eliza J 13 scholar, all b Edin; Also servants: FRASER * 2.6 Eliza Fairbairn appeared on the census of 1891 as wife of James Fairbairn 36 Dublin St, Edinburgh St Mary, MLN, SCT, enumerated as FAIRBAIRN: James 74 reitred banker b Edin; wife Eliza 57 b ENG; Children: John W 35 bank clerk, Helena 33, Eliza T 23 all b Edin; Servant Catherine SWANSON 24 b Bower, CAI.12
