     County Durham Commercial Directories show that James was a Master Mariner, a ship owner and a ship’s insurance broker. Associated vessels (in various capacities) include the snow “Agenoria”, the brig “Juno”, the brigantine “Wansbeck”, "Josepha."2,3

Wonder if there's any connection between James Master Mariner of Sth Shields and Robert the ship owner of South Shields listed as bankrupt in 1813?9,10

     James Fairbairn and Ann Fairbairn appeared on the census of 1841 on the Wansbeck, Dawdon Harbour, Easington Hundred, DUR, ENG, and are assumed to be husband and wife. They were enumerated as FAIRBAIRN: James 45 Master mariner; Ann 40; John 10, James 12 (given the bap. data, thiink these ages should be reversed), Ann 8; All b Cty.11
     The census of 1851 showed James with his wife Ann, their dtr Ann 5 Palatine St, Westoe, Dist of Sth Shields, DUR, ENG, household enumerated as FAIRBAIRN: James 54 clerk of Coal ?, Night Office; wife Ann 53; Children: Ann 19 at home, James 21 butcher. All b Sth Shields, DUR.4
     The census of 1861 showed James with his wife Ann, their dtr Ann 4 Palatine St, Westoe, Dist of Sth Shields, DUR, ENG, household enumerated as FAIRBAIRN: James 64 ship owner & clerk ? office ; Children: Ann 28, James 32 wid. butcher; Grdchildren: William A 5, Ann 4 All b Sth Shields, DUR; Servant: Frances HUMBLE 21 b NBL.12 James Fairbairn appeared on the census of 1871 at at the Grocer Shop, Great Smeaton, Dist of Northallerton, YKS, ENG, in the household of Edward Cundell Banks and Ann Banks as father-in-law of Edward Cundell Banks.13
