Intro

     Another son of John & Jane (WADDELL) FAIRBAIRN has now been identified.
The id was made from the West Yorkshire Marriages and Banns (now available on ancestry) showing that George's father was a John, carrier, and the witnesses being a James and Mary Ann FAIRBAIRN. James and George are definitely siblings, both in Bradford, both born Scotland, with father John a carrier - which occupation fits with their brother Andrew's baptism details.5

     George Fairbairn was born on 10 Aug 1832 Smailholm, ROX, SCT, Place given variously as Smailholm (1851) or Kelso (1891) with military record showing born "at Smailholm nr Kelso". Exact date derived from service record showing George as under age to 9 Aug '49, reckoning his service from the 10th, and age at discharge being 21 yrs 64 days on 12 Oct 1852 - might be the 9th!1,6,7,4
     George Fairbairn married Sarah Burgess, daughter of Thomas Burgess, on 3 Nov 1853 Cathedral, Bradford, WRY, ENG, cert. shows George as 22, gardner, s/o John FAIRBAIRN carrier; Sarah as 25 servant d/o Thomas BURGESS saddler; George signed, Sarah her mark; Both resid.      George Fairbairn appeared on the census of 1851 at the Royal Artillery Cavalry Barracks, Leeds, WRY, ENG, with Andrew Fairbairn, enumerated as FAIRBAIRN: Andrew 20, George 19, both Gunner R I Horse Artillery, labourer, scholar, b Smailholm (assumed to be brothers, children of John & Jane (WADDELL) FAIRBAIRN.)4,9
